OAKLAND PROJECTS REVISITED

A collaboration between a group of Manchester School of Art students and Manchester Academy High school students via The Whitworth, looking at youth media portrayal in the city and encouraging them to take control of their own narratives with a curriculum designed to improve media literacy skills. Influenced by Suzanne Lacy's Oakland Projects (1991-2001), various workshops, photo shoots and conversations were conducted however due to the 2019 Coronavirus outbreak the project became online based allowing space for wider contribution and conversation. This lead to a transatlantic conversation around the Black Lives Matter Movement in California and Manchester, hosted by myself and Saif Khan.
